Ornos beach with calm water and the village on the hill

Mykonos with kids & families

Shallow bays, pelicans, ship models and the lions of Delos — plus how to handle strollers, heat and late dinners.

  • Shallow bays: Ornos, Agios Ioannis
  • Pelicans & ship models
  • Carrier beats stroller
  • Avoid Paradise afternoons

The short answer

Yes, Mykonos works with children — if you choose the right side of the island. Stay at Ornos, Platis Gialos or Agios Stefanos for shallow, sheltered water and tavernas on the sand. Keep the party beaches for another trip, bring a baby carrier for Chora's stepped lanes, and plan the day around the midday heat.

Beaches

The best beaches for children

Calm, shallow water at Ornos beach Best overall

Ornos

A deep, sheltered bay with shallow water, sunbeds, tavernas and a supermarket. Frequent buses to Chora.

Agios Stefanos beach north of the New Port Quiet

Agios Stefanos

A calm sandy bay north of the New Port, with tavernas and room to dig. Great for families staying in Tourlos.

Kalo Livadi beach on the south-east coast Space

Kalo Livadi

A long beach that shelves gently, with space to spread out away from the beach bars.

Also good: Agios Ioannis for calm water and sunsets, and Platis Gialos for a long beach with hotels behind. Avoid Paradise and Super Paradise from mid-afternoon in high season (loud music, adult crowd), and the north coast on windy days, when waves and currents build. Many beaches have no lifeguard — keep children within reach.

Things to do

What children actually enjoy

Petros the pelican on the Chora waterfront Free

Meet the pelicans

Petros and his companions are the island's mascots, often found near the Old Port and Little Venice. Look, photograph, do not feed.

On the waterfront
Entrance of the Aegean Maritime Museum Indoors

Aegean Maritime Museum

Ship models, old maps and a lighthouse lantern in the garden — a cool hour on a hot afternoon.

Ship models
Marble lions on the Terrace of the Lions on Delos Half day

Lions on Delos

The boat ride, the marble lions and the theatre win over most children. Go on the first boat and keep the visit to two hours.

Keep it short
The Kato Mili windmills above Chora Free

Windmills at sunset

A short climb, big views and room to run on the ridge — hold hands in strong wind.

Before dinner
Kalafatis bay, the island's watersports base Older kids

Watersports at Kalafatis

Windsurf and dive centres on a wide bay offer lessons for older children and teenagers — ask about age limits.

Strollers, heat and the small things

Stroller or carrier?

Chora's lanes are narrow, paved and often stepped. A carrier is far easier in town; a stroller works on beach promenades and in Ornos and Platis Gialos.

Plan around midday

July–August afternoons are hot and exposed. Beach in the morning, rest from 13:00 to 17:00, out again for sunset and dinner.

Car seats

Children need a proper child seat in cars. Ask for one when you book a transfer or rental — taxis rarely carry them.

Eating out

Greek tavernas welcome children, even late at night. Simple dishes — grilled chicken, pasta, chips, keftedes (meatballs) — are on most menus.

Health

Pharmacies in Chora stock baby supplies and sun creams. The Mykonos Health Center is on +30 22893 60000; in an emergency call 112.

Where to stay

Ornos, Platis Gialos and Agios Stefanos for beach access. Some resorts, such as Santa Marina at Ornos, have children's facilities.

Plan

A three-day family plan

  • Day 1 Morning at Ornos beach; afternoon rest; 18:00 walk through Chora, ice cream, pelicans and the windmills at sunset.
  • Day 2 First boat to Delos (lions and theatre), back by lunch; afternoon at Agios Ioannis; early dinner.
  • Day 3 Water taxi from Ornos to Agrari for a calm cove; late afternoon at the Maritime Museum; farewell dinner in Ano Mera.
When

The best time to go with children

June and early September are ideal: the sea is warm, beaches and tavernas are open, and the midday heat and crowds are easier than in late July and August. Late May and late September suit families with toddlers who do not need the warmest water. In August, book rooms, transfers and family-friendly beach tables early, and keep beach time to the morning and late afternoon.

Common questions

Family questions

Is Mykonos good for families with kids?

Yes, if you base yourself on the calm south and west coast — Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Platis Gialos or Agios Stefanos — rather than near the party beaches. Children love the boat to Delos, the pelicans and the windmills, and tavernas welcome families. Bring a carrier for Chora's stepped lanes.

Which Mykonos beach is best for toddlers?

Ornos: a sheltered bay with shallow, calm water, tavernas on the sand and frequent buses from Chora. Agios Stefanos and Agios Ioannis are good alternatives. Avoid the north coast on windy days, when waves build, and the party beaches in the afternoon.

Can you use a stroller in Mykonos?

Only partly. Chora's old town has narrow, paved lanes with frequent steps, so a baby carrier is much easier there. Strollers work on the flat waterfronts, in Ornos and Platis Gialos and at most beach hotels. Ask your hotel about step-free access before you book.
