  • Direct from Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna
  • ID card is enough
  • EHIC (TEAM) valid
  • August = peak

The short answer

From late spring to autumn, direct flights link Mykonos with Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna, Verona and Salerno in about two hours. Italian citizens need only an ID card, and the EHIC (TEAM) covers public healthcare. Book August early — Ferragosto week is one of the busiest of the year — or choose June or September for better prices.

The New Port of Mykonos with ferries
By sea: Italy to Greece, then a Cyclades ferry

By ferry and car: ferries cross from Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Venice to Patras or Igoumenitsa. From Patras it is about three hours' drive to Piraeus or Rafina, then a ferry to Mykonos (2.5–5.5 hours). It is a two-day journey — worth it only if you want your own car on a longer island-hopping trip.

Via Athens: with no direct flight on your date, fly to Athens and continue with Aegean Airlines or Sky Express (about 40 minutes), or by ferry from Piraeus or Rafina.

Money, documents and booking tips

Documents

A valid Italian ID card (carta d'identità) or passport is enough. Bring your EHIC (Tessera Sanitaria / TEAM) for public healthcare, plus travel insurance.

Phone

EU roaming rules apply — use your Italian SIM as at home, within your plan's limits.

Budget

Mykonos is expensive: about €80–140 a day on a budget and €180–320 mid-range, before flights (Visit Mykonos estimates, Oct 2026).

Food

Plenty of Italian restaurants in Chora, but try kopanisti, louza and grilled fish — and agree fish prices per kilo before cooking.

Common questions

Italy → Mykonos questions

How do I get to Mykonos from Italy?

By direct seasonal flight from Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna, Verona or Salerno — about two hours — with ITA Airways, Neos, easyJet, Ryanair, Volotea, Wizz Air or Aeroitalia. Out of season, fly to Athens and connect by plane or ferry. Check current schedules with each airline.

Is there a ferry from Italy to Mykonos?

Not directly. Ferries sail from Ancona, Bari, Brindisi and Venice to Patras or Igoumenitsa in western Greece; from there you drive to Piraeus or Rafina and take a Cyclades ferry to Mykonos. It takes about two days and suits travellers bringing a car.

How many days do Italians usually spend in Mykonos?

Most stay four to seven nights: enough for Chora, Delos, several beaches and the nightlife. Many combine Mykonos with Paros, Naxos or Santorini by ferry. In August, book well ahead, as Ferragosto week is one of the busiest of the year.

Do Italians need a passport for Mykonos?

No. Greece is in the EU and the Schengen area, so a valid Italian ID card (carta d'identità) is enough, although airlines may ask for the electronic version for check-in. Bring your Tessera Sanitaria (EHIC) for public healthcare, and buy travel insurance for anything beyond it, such as evacuation from the island.
